Since I posted here to look for someone to take a picture of this thing, it's only fair that I post the actual picture (though it was taken by Mike Ross from DPChallenge). Between signing the lease for my new apartment and going out for Char's birthday yesterday, I paid a visit to the Los Angeles Zoo. It was a little hot, sending most of the animals to the shade for sleep. This was one of the few exhibits with any activity.. a group of Gerenuks - originally from Africa. This was taken during the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Cup, during a match between Sebastien Grosjean and Ricardo Mello. Grosjean started out extremely strong, but faded later in the match and lost to Mello in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 3-6). I like his position, the ball's position, the shadow, the colors/shapes - definitely the best (imo) of the batch. Shooting sports is much harder than I thought! I got this one yesterday on a trip to Venice with Kristin. We watched the surfers for a bit, and I saw this sailboat going back and forth behind these rocks and decided to take a few pictures. It sort of reminds me of the end of 'The Truman Show', where he sails out to sea to discover the truth behind his existence. On a sidenote, if you haven't seen Wedding Crashers yet - go check it out! I got a kick out of this shot - the expression on this squirrel makes it feel as if I just caught it doing something it shouldn't be - a glint of surprise while it looks at the camera and pauses snacking for just a moment. This is Mr. Kim (I've never gotten his first name) - he has been gardening for our landlord for the past year, and presumably much longer than that. He seems to be okay with the work, but you can tell that the labor is really starting to take a toll on him. While one friend was babysitting this miniature pinscher for another friend, I couldn't resist playing with it a bit and taking some pictures. For those of you that know Linda, this is her new puppy! At least I think this is the Pistil.. maybe our resident expert Derek can help me out on this one? :) This is one of the first images out of my newly fixed Digital Rebel and my new Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro lens - straight outta my backyard. I never realized how difficult it would be to get proper focus when doing macro work - the shallow DOF and a slight breeze made it tough. Not the best angle, but about the best I could get at the moment. This is one of the many basketball courts at Venice Beach, which has little bleachers lining two sides of it. I'm not sure why I like this shot, since there seem to be a lot of things that could be improved and the action isn't all that impressive.. Another from the time I spent wandering around Santa Monica a few weeks ago - just a public sink outside some public restrooms alongside the beach.. not the most interesting subject for sure, but I liked the composition and lines.. and the bit of water everywhere that shows its heavy use. I took this shot a few weeks ago when I went to the Disaster Medicine Symposium in Irvine - same demonstration as the jaws of life shot posted three pictures ago. They simulated a wreck between two cars and a U-Haul, which dropped this and some unidentified liquid out of some canisters (at which point the driver got out and ran away). The white stuff on the ground is sugar or something, but was supposed to represent an "unknown white substance" that they were supposed to treat with care.
